{"id":10579,"date":"2015-05-18T13:37:44","date_gmt":"2015-05-18T17:37:44","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.nationalsarmrace.com\/?p=10579"},"modified":"2015-05-19T12:56:50","modified_gmt":"2015-05-19T16:56:50","slug":"dcmdva-district-high-school-tournament-report-2015-post-season","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/nationalsarmrace.com\/?p=10579","title":{"rendered":"DC\/MD\/VA District High School Tournament Report: 2015 post-season"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Here&#8217;s my first cut through tracking the various local high school baseball tournaments.\u00a0 As we learned in 2014, Maryland and Virginia&#8217;s schedules are quite off from each other, with Maryland&#8217;s state tournament starting before Virginia&#8217;s public high schools even finish their regular seasons, but we&#8217;ll keep track the best we can.\u00a0 Here&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nationalsarmrace.com\/?p=9271\">2014&#8217;s final prep wrap-up post<\/a>, with all the various winners noted.<\/p>\n<p>As the Maryland playoffs kicked in, there was an interesting WashPost article about <a href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/sports\/highschools\/area-baseball-coaches-weigh-risks-in-lining-up-pitching-for-postseason-runs\/2015\/05\/11\/03c9c03e-f7e7-11e4-9030-b4732caefe81_story.html\">how to setup your pitching for the playoffs<\/a>.\u00a0 Ironically, one of the main teams mentioned (Reservoir) was upset in the Maryland playoffs, perhaps due to their rotation choices.\u00a0 Personal connection useless tidbit; the Chantilly coach (<strong>Kevin Ford<\/strong>) was a long-time local Vienna player and we played with him and his brother (<strong>Jeff Ford<\/strong>) all growing up.<\/p>\n<p>Lets get to it.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong>Northern Virginia<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Virginal district tournaments get started last weekend and most are scheduled to finish this week.\u00a0 The VHSL site has some <a href=\"http:\/\/www.vhsl.org\/athletics.baseball.baseball-conference-region-results\">district brackets already published.<\/a>\u00a0 Here&#8217;s a preview of the district tournaments for local conferences with the leading contenders.<\/p>\n<p>The top four teams from each district tourney form the 16-team regional brackets, to be published later on once all the divisions are finalized.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">6-A\u00a0Conference 5\/Concorde<\/span>: <\/strong>Oakton and Chantilly are the 1\/2 seeds, and Oakton has to be a favorite for the 6-A North regional title.<\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong>6-A Conference 6\/Liberty<\/strong><\/span>: McLean and Madison are 1\/2 seeds, playing semis on 5\/19\/15.\u00a0 Madison lost out to McLean for the district title but may be a co-regional favorite with Oakton.<\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong>6-A\u00a0Conference 7\/Potomac<\/strong><\/span>: South County &amp; Lake Braddock perennial favorites.<\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong>6-A Conference 8\/ Cedar Run<\/strong><\/span>: Rivals Patriot and Battlefield are 1\/2 seeds and have already played three times this year.\u00a0 Both should challenge for the regional title, but I suspect they&#8217;re slightly behind the Oaktons and Madisons this year.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>I&#8217;d love to see an all-Vienna regional final, but teams like Chantilly, Battlfield and McLean could be pesky.<\/p>\n<p>In the 5-A division:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong>5-A Conference 13\/Capitol<\/strong><\/span>: Marshall and Edison are the 1\/2 seeds, as they were last year.<\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong>5-A Conference 14<\/strong><\/span>: Stone Bridge repeats as conference champ, with Broad Run the 2 seed in this small group.<\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong>5-A Conference 15<\/strong><\/span>: Mountain View and Potomac are 1\/2 seeds.<\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong>5-A Conference 16<\/strong><\/span>: Halifax, Patrick Henry-Ashland are perennial favorites.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>I&#8217;d guess Marshall and Stone Bridge are early 5-A regional favorites, but we have no idea how good some of these non-DC area teams are.<\/p>\n<p>There are some DC-local teams in the 4th and smaller divisions (mostly in Loudoun County).\u00a0 We&#8217;ll go through them once their brackets are made available on VHSL.\u00a0 The best 4-A team out there is probably Loudoun Valley, currently in the WP top 10.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Maryland<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>At this point, the Maryland State tournament is well underway, with all four &#8220;regional&#8221; champions crowned and the State semis set for 5\/19\/15.\u00a0 Brackets here at the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mpssaa.org\/2015-baseball-state-semifinals-on-deck-for-tuesday-519\/\">MPSAA website<\/a>.\u00a0 The Washington Post\/AllMetSports.com reviewed all the Regional finals <a href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/sports\/highschools\/truman-thomas-powers-southern-baseball-past-patuxent-into-maryland-2a-semifinals\/2015\/05\/15\/6720f77a-f9ad-11e4-9030-b4732caefe81_story.html\">in this online post here<\/a>.\u00a0 We&#8217;ll run-down the regional results with some surprises:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/mpssaa.countysportszone.com\/?bracket=476\">4-A Regionals<\/a><\/span>: both of last year&#8217;s finalists (Chesapeake and Sherwood) lost early as new blood takes over Maryland states.\u00a0 Perry Hall out of Baltimore took out both number 1 seeds in its regional to take the 4-A north.\u00a0\u00a0 Wise from Upper Marlboro also took out two PG-county #1 seeds to win the 4-A south.\u00a0 Severna Park beat last year&#8217;s 4-A champ Chesapeake en route to the 4-A East championship, and the 4-A West regional final came down to perhaps the two best local Maryland teams, with current #2 All-Met ranked Gaithersburg taking out Montgomery Blair to reach the state semis.\u00a0 <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">State Semis<strong>: <\/strong><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Perry Hall v Severna Park, Gaithersburg-Wise at U-Maryland on 5\/19\/15.\u00a0 State final is scheduled for 5\/22\/15 at Ripken Stadium in Aberdeen.<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/mpssaa.countysportszone.com\/?bracket=475\">3-A Regionals<\/a>: Last year&#8217;s state finalist North Harford (Plyville in North Maryland) repeated as 3-A north champ.\u00a0 Mt. Hebron in Ellicott City pulled the big upset and beat last year&#8217;s champion Reservoir in the 3-A East regional final (perhaps because Reservoir lost their ace <strong>Cody Morris<\/strong> to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.baltimoresun.com\/news\/maryland\/howard\/lisbon-fulton\/ph-hs-reservoir-ace-cody-morris-prepares-for-tommy-john-surgery-but-state-title-defense-comes-first-20150515-story.html#navtype=outfit&amp;page=1\">TJ surgery<\/a>).\u00a0 Chopticon (way down in St. Mary&#8217;s county) and Urbana (just south of Frederick) filled out the 3-A state semis, beating last year&#8217;s regional winner Thomas Johnson en route.\u00a0 State semis set for Joe Cannon stadium in Hanover on 5\/19\/15.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/mpssaa.countysportszone.com\/?bracket=474\">2-A Regionals<\/a>: Eastern Tech, Patterson Mill, South Carroll and last\u00a0 year&#8217;s champ <a href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/sports\/highschools\/truman-thomas-powers-southern-baseball-past-patuxent-into-maryland-2a-semifinals\/2015\/05\/15\/6720f77a-f9ad-11e4-9030-b4732caefe81_story.html\">Southern<\/a> make up the 2-A state semis (mostly smaller schools outside the DC area).<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/mpssaa.countysportszone.com\/?bracket=473\">1-A Regionals<\/a>: McDonough, Colonel Richardson, Douglass and Brunswick make up this year&#8217;s 1-A state semis (mostly smaller schools outside the DC area).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong>DC<br \/>\n<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/thedciaa.com\/apps\/pages\/index.jsp?uREC_ID=218108&amp;type=d&amp;termREC_ID=&amp;pREC_ID=425994\">DCIAA<\/a>: the regular season runs through 5\/20\/15 and the DCIAA tournament runs through 6\/3\/15.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dcsaasports.org\/\">DCSAA<\/a>: the 2015 tournament has yet to be scheduled.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Remember, there&#8217;s not usually much suspense in who is winning the DCIAA; Wilson has not lost to a DCIAA opponent in more than 20\u00a0 years.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><strong style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Private Leagues: WCAC\/MAC\/IAC and VISAA\/Maryland Private<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.miaasports.net\/index.php?option=com_content&amp;view=article&amp;id=256&amp;Itemid=65&amp;cf=2&amp;sp=12&amp;pgnc=1\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">MIAA<\/span><\/a>: Powerhouse Spalding beat Calvert Hill to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/sports\/highschools\/spalding-repeats-as-miaa-a-conference-champion\/2015\/05\/17\/000e0d68-f9b0-11e4-9030-b4732caefe81_story.html\">repeat as MIAA Class A champs<\/a>.\u00a0 <a title=\"wiki.allmetsports.com\" href=\"http:\/\/wiki.allmetsports.com\/all-met\/schools\/anne-arundel\/st-marys-annapolis\/baseball\/\">St. Mary\u2019s-Annapolis<\/a> won the MIAA-B championship, also for the 2nd year in a row, and is 52-3 over the past two seasons.\u00a0 <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">?? won the MIAA-C.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.visaa.org\/sports\/baseball\/\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">VISAA<\/span><\/a>: Liberty Christian repeated as the VISAA Division 1 champ.\u00a0 Local teams O&#8217;Connell, Flint Hill and Paul VI entered but lost (the entry to this tourney seems to be done via rankings, as opposed to results in the respective league&#8217;s post-season tourneys, since Flint Hill was upset but still got invited to VISAA).\u00a0 Greenbriar Christian took the Division 2 title and the Southampton Academy took the Division 3 title among smaller Virginia private schools.<\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">WCAC<\/span>: St. Johns topped DeMatha in a 3-game series to win the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/sports\/highschools\/st-johns-grabs-second-straight-wcac-baseball-title-with-win-over-dematha\/2015\/05\/10\/412c875e-f341-11e4-b2f3-af5479e6bbdd_story.html\">WCAC for the 2nd year in a row<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">IAC<\/span>: Georgetown Prep beat Landon to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/sports\/highschools\/power-pitching-defense-carry-georgetown-prep-to-iac-baseball-title\/2015\/05\/16\/f4119ac6-f9ae-11e4-9030-b4732caefe81_story.html\">win the IAC<\/a>, avenging their loss in the finals last year.<\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">PVAC<\/span>: Sandy Spring Friends defeated Jewish Day school for the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/sports\/highschools\/sandy-spring-friends-beat-jewish-day-school-for-first-pvac-title-4-0\/2015\/05\/14\/79e5bd5e-f8cd-11e4-a13c-193b1241d51a_story.html\">inaugural title in this fledgling league<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">MAC:\u00a0<span style=\"color: #000000;\"> the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.insidenova.com\/sports\/panthers-blank-all-opponents-to-win-mac-baseball-tournament\/article_91d6dca6-fa42-11e4-9d5a-3b064dd467c0.html\">Potomac school beat St. James<\/a> (who
