Photo via mlb.com<\/p><\/div>\n<p>New anointed Nationals closer\u00a0<strong>Koda Glover<\/strong> came into Friday night&#8217;s game in what was absolutely a &#8220;save situation.&#8221; \u00a0<strong>Max Scherzer<\/strong> ran out of gas, clearly, had loaded the bases and the tying run was at the plate.<\/p>\n<p>What&#8217;d he do? \u00a0He threw four &#8220;sliders,&#8221; all of them between <a href=\"http:\/\/www.brooksbaseball.net\/pfxVB\/pfx.php?month=5&amp;day=26&amp;year=2017&amp;game=gid_2017_05_26_sdnmlb_wasmlb_1%2F&amp;pitchSel=606983&amp;prevGame=gid_2017_05_26_sdnmlb_wasmlb_1%2F&amp;prevDate=526&amp;league=mlb\">95.4 and 96.4 MPH<\/a>, all of them unhittable,\u00a0and struck out\u00a0<strong>Hunter Renfroe<\/strong> with ease to close the game out.<\/p>\n<p>Here&#8217;s the video of the final pitch:\u00a0http:\/\/m.mlb.com\/video\/v1430295083\/sdwsh-glover-strikes-out-renfroe-to-notch-the-save\/?game_pk=490824<\/p>\n<p>Now, some might call his pitch a cutter; Glover refers to it as a cutter while Pitch F\/X classifies it as a slider. \u00a0It seems to me to be somewhere in between in terms of movement: i think it moves more than\u00a0<strong>Mariano Rivera<\/strong>&#8216;s cutter\/cut-fastball, but doesn&#8217;t move as sharply as other sliders that we&#8217;ve seen. \u00a0Either way, a 96 mph pitch with that kind of movement is a heck of a pitch.<\/p>\n<p>Lots of people freaked out when\u00a0<strong>Noah Snydergaard<\/strong> debuted his 95mph slider, which looks like an actual slider (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazinavenue.com\/2016\/4\/6\/11375524\/mets-noah-syndergaard-slider-warthen-new-york\">see video evidence here<\/a>) more than Glover&#8217;s. \u00a0And Snydergaard&#8217;s pitch is pretty amazing. \u00a0But so is a 96-mph cut-fastball, especially from a guy who really doesn&#8217;t have that much time in the majors and who might be improving\/learning as we speak.<\/p>\n<p>Glover should have been the closer from day one and now he is; i&#8217;m guessing he doesn&#8217;t get supplanted from the role for a while.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>New anointed Nationals closer\u00a0Koda Glover came into Friday night&#8217;s game in what was absolutely a &#8220;save situation.&#8221; \u00a0Max Scherzer ran out of gas, clearly, had loaded the bases and the tying run was at the plate.
