{"id":15799,"date":"2019-05-21T17:50:07","date_gmt":"2019-05-21T21:50:07","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.nationalsarmrace.com\/?p=15799"},"modified":"2019-05-21T17:52:05","modified_gmt":"2019-05-21T21:52:05","slug":"how-did-so-many-of-rizzos-off-season-moves-fail-to-pan-out","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/nationalsarmrace.com\/?p=15799","title":{"rendered":"How did so many of Rizzo&#8217;s off-season moves fail to pan out?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.nationalsarmrace.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/CorbinPatrick-landing.jpg\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-8966\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-8966\" src=\"http:\/\/www.nationalsarmrace.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/CorbinPatrick-landing.jpg\" alt=\"How is Corbin basically the only &quot;good&quot; off-season acquisition?\" width=\"268\" height=\"188\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>I just perused some team splits for 2019.\u00a0 Your Washington Nationals offense is, as of this writing, (per <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fangraphs.com\/leaders.aspx?pos=all&amp;stats=bat&amp;lg=all&amp;qual=0&amp;type=8&amp;season=2019&amp;month=0&amp;season1=2019&amp;ind=0&amp;team=0,ts&amp;rost=0&amp;age=0&amp;filter=&amp;players=0&amp;sort=10,d\">Fangraphs<\/a>):<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>20th in fWAR; a *combined* 3.7.<\/li>\n<li>20th in wRC+, a paltry 91<\/li>\n<li>22nd in Batting Average, hitting .243 as a team<\/li>\n<li>9th in K% .. sitting at exactly 25% , but&#8230;<\/li>\n<li>sitting 21st in ISO, meaning they&#8217;re striking out a ton but not getting the added benefit of the power.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>How about the defense?\u00a0 The team is<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>27th in Fangraphs&#8217; total Defense stat<\/li>\n<li>29th in UZR\/150<\/li>\n<li>28th in DRS, a combined -27 of runs &#8220;saved&#8221;\u00a0 (interestingly &#8230;their run differential sits at 32 right now, almost entirely on the defense)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>And then there&#8217;s the bullpen:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>30th in bullpen ERA<\/li>\n<li>30th in LOB%<\/li>\n<li>25th in bullpen FIP<\/li>\n<li>21st in K\/9<\/li>\n<li>24th in bullpen fWAR .. somehow grading out as a group to exactly neutral 0.0 fWAR.\u00a0 In other words &#8230; completely replaceable across the board as a whole.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>At least we have the starters:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>#1 in fWAR<\/li>\n<li>13th in ERA, but<\/li>\n<li>4th in FIP (Fangraph&#8217;s fWAR for pitchers is heavy on the FIP &#8230; and the Nats starters are doing this with a .306 BABIP.<\/li>\n<li>#2 in K\/9.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Anyway &#8230; point is; the hitters are bad, the bullpen is awful, and the defense is atrocious.<\/p>\n<p>How exactly did we get here?\u00a0 Well,\u00a0<strong>Mike Rizzo<\/strong> was incredibly active over the winter.\u00a0 But, amazingly, practically all of his moves have turned out bad.\u00a0 Here&#8217;s a list of all his major transactions in the off-season:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Kyle Barraclough<\/strong>: 4.67 ERA<\/li>\n<li><strong>Trevor Rosenthal<\/strong>: complete train wreck<\/li>\n<li><strong>Yan Gomes<\/strong>; hitting .228<\/li>\n<li><strong>Tanner Rainey<\/strong>: walked 12 in 18 innings in AAA.<\/li>\n<li>Meanwhile\u00a0<strong>Tanner Roark<\/strong> has a 3.51 ERA and a 127 ERA+ in 10 starts for Cincy this year.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Matt Adams<\/strong>: 89 OPS+ as our big &#8220;bench bat&#8221;<\/li>\n<li><strong>Anibal Sanchez<\/strong>: 5.10 ERA in 9 starts<\/li>\n<li><strong>Brian Dozier<\/strong>: hitting .205<\/li>\n<li><strong>Jeremy Hellickson<\/strong>: 6.23 ERA in 8 starts.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Tony Sipp<\/strong>: 5.79 ERA.<\/li>\n<li>He cut loose\u00a0<strong>Trevor Gott<\/strong> in February but kept a slew of other minor league arms: here&#8217;s Gott&#8217;s SF line so far this year: 21 innings, 2.11 ERA, 193 ERA+<\/li>\n<li>He cut loose\u00a0<strong>Austin Adams<\/strong>, who had a ridiculous 24\/3 K\/BB ratio in 12.1 Fresno innings, who then got picked up by Seattle and has punched out 7 of the first 11 batter&#8217;s hes faced.\u00a0 But was he good enough for our bullpen?\u00a0 Nope.<\/li>\n<li>He brought in\u00a0<strong>Dan Jennings<\/strong>: 13.50 ERA in 8 appearances.\u00a0 Why exactly did he get the last 3-4 outings?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Even his AAA MLFA moves to provide veteran pitcher backup have been suspect:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Henderson Alvarez<\/strong>: 8.01 ERA in Fresno<\/li>\n<li><strong>Scott Copeland<\/strong>: 6.33 ERA in Fresno<\/li>\n<li><strong>Vidal Nuno<\/strong>; also a 6.33 ERA in Fresno<\/li>\n<li><strong>J.J.
